7 weight loss tips to survive Thanksgiving

Fall is already upon us, and that means that Thanksgiving is right around the corner. Do you worry about the holidays and undoing all the hard work you have done on your weight loss journey? Losing weight during the holidays is indeed challenging, but preparation and creating good habits make it entirely possible. Here are seven top tips to help you on your path to weight loss during the holidays.

  1. Start the day with exercise. Take an hour out of your morning to burn off some calories by exercising. You can even start a new family tradition by getting everyone involved with a healthy morning walk or bike ride. By beginning your day with exercise, it will not only burn off some calories but put you in a healthy mindset for the day ahead. 
  2. Offer to bring a dish. Side dishes can often be loaded with hidden calories such as butter, and you don’t always know what is in them if you haven’t made them. Bring a dish with you to Thanksgiving dinner that is healthy but tasty. That way, you have once dish to reach for that you know is not going to affect your diet.
  3. Do not approach Thanksgiving dinner starving. It’s tempting to starve yourself on the morning of Thanksgiving and convince yourself that it is best to eat just that one big meal. However, that is not the best option. Eat consistently throughout the day to avoid over-eating later. Start with a balanced, healthy breakfast. Eat healthy snacks that are good for weight loss like veggies leading up to the meal. By controlling your hunger, you are less likely to over-eat too many calorific foods later.
  4. Watch the alcohol intake. Alcohol can affect your calorie intake in two ways. Not only are many alcoholic drinks high in calories and sugar, but you are more likely to make unhealthy food choices when you’ve had a bit too much to drink. Pick one low-calorie alcoholic drink and stick to it. Sip slowly, and set yourself a limit on how alcoholic many drinks you want to have. If you want to steer clear from alcohol, take an alternative drink option to Thanksgiving dinner. You could even offer to be the designated driver to help avoid drinking alcohol. 
  5. Monitor your portion size and listen to your body. It’s easy to keep snacking and refilling your plate on Thanksgiving. There is the temptation to grab a little bit here and there, then return for more. This makes it easy to lose track of how much you have eaten. Try to fill your plate only once with careful selections and sensible portion sizes. You do not have to try everything on the table, and if your plate is already full then you do not need that extra food. Listen to your body and give it time to register what you have eaten. When you are satisfied, it’s time to stop eating. 
  6. Drink plenty of water. Make sure you have a glass of water to hand throughout the day. Drinking plenty of water will help you feel fuller to avoid overeating. It will also help you slow down your alcohol intake. 
  7. Take control of dessert. If you are full, do not feel pressured to eat dessert there and then. By giving your body time to realize if it is full, you may decide you do not need a dessert. You can save it for later, or even take it home for another day. If you do decide to eat dessert, then ask to serve yourself. That way, you can still enjoy dessert but control your portion size.
